ASPIN Nutritional Database
by ASPIN Team
As an added value for ASPIN members, ASPIN maintains a nutritional database on our website, mesc.org/aspin/. The website has nutritional data for food, commodities, produce, dairy, and bread products. This data is obtained directly from the manufacturer’s websites and/or from the brokers who represent the manufacturers.
The current school year’s nutritional data is posted under Nutritional Data buttons for each contract (see screenshot below) on our website and the prior year’s nutritional data is archived. This helps to ensure that our members have the most current nutritional data available.
Nutritional data assists our members with planning their menus to meet the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards and regulations for school food service. It also assists our members during their Arizona Department of Education administrative reviews. USDA regulations require school districts to collect and maintain food product labels for all food products listed on their menus.
Following are the types of labels that are needed by school districts for their meal programs.
- Nutrition Fact Label—contains product-specific information that breaks down the number of calories, carbs, fat, fiber, and vitamins per serving, list of ingredients as well as any possible allergens.
- Child Nutrition (CN) Label—identifies the contribution of a product to meet the meal pattern requirements and provides a food crediting statement. These labels are authorized by the USDA.
- Product Formulation Statement (PFS)—a document developed by manufacturers that provides specific information on how a product credits towards the USDA meal pattern for Child Nutrition Programs. It includes a detailed explanation of what the product.
